“This is the story of a man named Stanley. Stanley worked for a company in a big building where he was employee number 427. Employee number 427’s job was simple, he sat at his desk in room 427 and he pushed buttons on a keyboard…”
The Boy who Cried Wolf and the cost of lies.
True Wealth and mistaking ownership for wealth.
A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing and how appearances deceive.
These are parables that have trekked the paths of time to teach us enduring lessons. They and their ilk still teach me now, but sometimes I have trouble relating to the context of the story. The same thing could be said about Disney movies and fantasy settings, in general.
What does a modern parable look like, then? Well, like Stanley. In an office, happy as a clam, following orders and pushing buttons. I was hooked immediately because the game reflected a reality which we know intimately: a reality filled by cubicles, coffee, and computers.
